What Are The First Three Things A Prospective Reader Notices About Your Book?

Whether you're a new author or a veteran writer, these three things never change--especially when it comes to attracting new readers.

Even well-known authors with a plethora of fans and loyal readers still know what the answer to this question is!

The First 3 Things A Reader Notices About Your Book

Whenever someone is looking for a new book to sample or purchase, the very first thing they are going to see is:

1.) Your book cover

In an earlier post, we talked about how important your eBook (or paperback or hardcover) cover image is to the success of your book.

Well, the reason its so important, is because, it's the very first opportunity you will have to catch a new reader's interest and draw their attention.

Once you've caught their attention, the next thing they're going to notice about your manuscript is its blurb or story synopsis.

2.) Blurb or story synopsis

Okay, so now that you've gotten their attention with your stand-out book cover image, you need to "wow" them with your synopsis or blurb.

Fiction and Nonfiction Manuscripts

If your book is a fiction book, the blurb should be a short, detailed summary of what your story is about.

If it's a nonfiction book, your synopsis should include a brief description of what the reader will learn by reading your manuscript.

For Fiction stories, you should make your blurb sound as interesting and exciting as possible without giving away too much info. You want to give them just enough information to make them want to find out what happens in your book.

For nonfiction manuscripts, sometimes adding a detailed list of all of the valid, pertinent information they will learn by reading your book can be a great idea.

The third and final opportunity you have to draw a prospective new reader in and keep them interested in your book is:

3.) The very first line of your story/manuscript

If your story starts out dull or uninteresting, then chances are that you are not going to keep your reader's attention. They may just close your book and move on to another selection with an interesting-looking cover image.

I can personally say, as an avid reader of fiction myself, I have passed on many a book that had a great-looking cover image, an exciting-sounding blurb or synopsis, but the story started off so dull and boring that I could not bring myself to continue reading it.

As writer, you need to try and put yourself in a reader's shoes and think like a reader would think. If you're a writer, chances are, you're a pretty avid reader, as well, so this shouldn't be very difficult for you to do.

Ask yourself this question every time you write a new manuscript:

Would YOU want to read your book?
