Why is it so important for your eBook (or paperback or hard cover book) to have a great synopsis and/or blurb? Find out here, NOW!
As writers, we KNOW our work is important to us--VERY important to us! But, we also want it to be important to our readers, as well!
A couple of weeks ago, we talked about how important the first line of our stories were to our prospective readers, and then, last week we touched on the importance of having a good eBook (or paperback, or hard cover) image. Well, this week, I want to emphasis on hoe important your story synopsis or blurb truly is to the how successful your book may turn out to be.
Blurbs for Fiction Manuscripts
If you happen to be a fiction writer (like me) then you have probably struggled with the content of your fictional story blurb at least once or twice (or twenty times).
So why is this content, this short, summarizing content so doggone important? The answer is simple: it's usually the second thing your prospective readers see after your intriguing eBook cover image catches their eye.
This is why your blurb should be an eye-catching, attention-holding, reader-drawing piece of writing.
I personally have come across many fiction stories that were actually really good tales, but their blurbs were so flat that a lot of readers were missing out on some great reads because the story blurb sucked.
Remember, after your book cover, the very next thing a prospective reader sees is your blurb.
Writing A Catchy Blurb
If you want your blurb to catch and hold the attention of your reader, (especially when writing fiction) it needs to start off with an eye-catching line.
For example, here are some example blurbs for a romance story:
Sandy Cox moves to a new city she's never been to and takes a new job. She meets a young man named John Law who is not interested in a serious relationship. Somehow, they unexpectedly fall in love.
But Sandy has a secret past and so does John. People from their past start causing problems in their relationship and make it hard for them to be together. Find out if they will be able to have their happily ever after.
OK, kind of boring, right? Here's the SAME blurb, but written differently:
Sandy Cox is a young, single woman trying to make her way in a new city.
John Law is a young, hot ladykiller who vows to never get tied down.
One day, the two of them meet in an unexpected and hilarious way and end up falling head over heels for each other.
But when people from their past start causing rifts in their budding romance, will they be able to overcome their differences and make their love stronger?
Or will the ghosts and secrets that surface be too much for their fragile egos to handle and tear them apart?
The questions in the blurb are a good way to spark readers' interest. Remember, it's human nature for us to want to find out answers to questions that spark our interest.
